What research is telling us:
When individuals learn with understanding, they can apply their knowledge to learn new topics and solve new and unfamiliar problems. When individuals do not learn with understanding, each new topic is learned as an isolated skill, and the skill they have learned can only be used to solve problems explicitly covered by instruction.
